-- B team(s) players will be divided up based on ability

Please note, team selection / tryouts will be closed to parent observation. Parents are asked to not enter the gym but will be required to wait outside.  Please have your son enter the gym through the regular gym door and plan to get checked in and wait on the bleachers until the coaches are ready for his group.  They will be dismissed at the other gym door.  An adult will watch to ensure they are picked up by a parent or carpool.

Level of play for the 5 thru 8 grade teams will be decided by the evaluators following team selection.  Grades 3&4 are instructional only, and we will have one A team at each of the 5&6 and 7&8 grade levels.

Practices will begin at the end of February and league matches will begin mid-March.  We'll do our best to accommodate other commitments throughout the season.

League Play - mid March to late May; games are usually Friday, Saturday, or Sunday late afternoon/evening, with the exception of a few weekday evening games.

We can always use more coaches so please consider volunteering.  Thank you to those of you who have already volunteered when registering your child.

Thank you for your interest in the St Ignatius Boys Volleyball Program!

Triple Ball Info

Triple ball is a modified game that helps younger athletes improve their overall skills and participation and to experience more success.  The format accelerates the amount of volleyball played in a much shorter amount of time.  Statistics have shown that athletes experience close to triple the number of rallies and contacts in this format, while attacking the ball 70% more often!

Sequence:
The game follows a sequence of three rallies (serve, free ball 1, and free ball 2).

• 1st rally – introduced by the server
• 2nd rally – introduced by a free ball tossed to the receiving team (6 spot)
• 3rd rally – introduces by a free ball tosses to the service team (6 spot)

The service alternates between teams after each three-ball sequence.

BENEFITS OF TRIPLE BALL

1. More touches, less waiting

  • Each rally starts with three balls served in a row (one from each team and one tossed by the coach).
  • This means kids get significantly more chances to play the ball — passing, setting, and hitting — instead of watching long rallies dominated by one or two skilled players.

2. Fair play and equal opportunity

  • Every team gets equal chances to serve and receive, so no team gets stuck always serving or always receiving.
  • It removes luck from the equation — games aren’t decided by one strong server.

3. Skill development

  • Because every rally begins in a structured way, players can focus on proper technique (serve receive, passing, setting, attacking).
  • Kids learn all aspects of the game instead of specializing too early.

4. Confidence and fun

  • More predictable play helps build confidence — players aren’t overwhelmed by tough serves or chaotic rallies.
  • Everyone feels involved and successful, which keeps kids engaged and excited to play.

5. Encourages teamwork and communication

  • Since the ball is in play more often and everyone participates, players have to talk, move, and work together.
  • This builds a strong foundation for competitive volleyball later.
